綠色和平（Greenpeace) 最近弄了個網頁控訴 Apple 產品對環境造成的傷害。樹大招風，產品熱賣才會有熱心人花這麼多時間來給你弄個網頁，哪管把裡頭的指控算到聯想、Dell、HP 等 IT 巨人頭上其實也一樣 makes sense。
雖然這夥人對 Apple 的控訴實在略嫌苛刻，但我認為這個偽網站也值得一看。內容值得三思，美工就更是一流!

If you think the success of Core2Duo desktop processors would bring Intel back the leading edge, you might have been a bit too optimistic too soon. Desktop and mobile processors simply serve the role to keep Intel (& AMD?) alive, the real battlefield lies in the more cash-generating hi-end markets.
Intel's last attempt to bet on its low clockspeed-performance-ratio Netburst architecture in both the x86 desktop and server market has handed a great deal of its market share to AMD's Opteron.

Xvid to DVD 編碼燒錄方案 九月 23. 2006
我常跟別人說如果你要一台電腦來上網、聽歌、看戲、燒碟，買 Mac 吧。這些東西 Mac 做得都比 PC 好 (相信我，OS X 內置的字體平滑功能，足以令你常到的網站看起來煥然一新!)，不過接著下一句通常都是說我還需要一台 PC 來幹些 dirty jobs。就好像以下要說的 Xvid / DVD transcoding，為 PC 開發的開放源碼及免費軟件就比 Mac 要多且快。
Divx 這個 MPEG-4 壓縮編碼標準很多人都聽說過，市面上不少家用 DVD 機也內置 Divx 解碼，在一隻 CD 約 700MB 的空間可儲存肉眼看起來質素跟 DVD 差不了多少的影片。不過 Divx 的編碼器 (encoder) 是要付費的，而 Xvid 則可說是免費版的 Divx，不少志願人士均定期在網上發佈 Xvid 的優化程式和解碼工具，所以近年越來越多於網上流通的影片都是經過 Xvid 編碼的 AVI 檔案。最常見的是被稱為 DVDrip，把整張 DVD 以 Xvid 壓縮成約 CD 大小，十分方便儲存的一種 AVI 檔。
安裝了 Xvid 解碼器的用戶，平常只需使用 Nero 內置的 Nero Vision DVD 編輯軟件，便能輕易把 Xvid 還原到一隻普通的 DVD 上。不過我發現 Nero Vision 可能因為臭蟲或其他原因，並不是每次都能夠成功將 Xvid 燒錄成 DVD，這些奇難雜症通常都能在網上找到 PC 的解決方案。
有志願人士為 PC 平台編寫了一套名為 DIKO 的免費軟件包，內置獨立的 Video / Audio 編碼器、轉碼器和燒錄軟件等，用戶稍作微調便可使用。筆者以 DIKO 加上 QuEnc 免費編碼器 (DIKO 內置 QuEnc 選項，但用戶需分別下載並在 DIKO 裡選擇正確的安裝路徑)，成功把多個 Nero Vision 未能辨認的 Xvid AVI 檔燒錄成普通 DVD 影碟，如有遇到類似問題的朋友，DIKO 值得一試。

Hackintosh update - OSX86 usability 九月 20. 2006
My OSX86 junkie has been lying around for quite sometime, but previous installations were more fun than realistic. Is this piece of junk going to make my life better? I'll show you guys some updates since my last attempt.
I have recently got myself a very nice ISO of 10.4.6 made by active OSX86 hacker JaS, this particular ISO contains not only the OS itself but also some of the most saught-after kernel updates to the hacked OS including AMD SSE2/SSE3, Intel SSE2/SSE3, VIA/nForce SATA support, Creative USB soundcard, etc.
Installation from the DVD was a breeze, except that I encountered "b0 error" everytime the machine reboots. I was able to get over it by pressing F8 to force-boot from the HDD, but this obviously didn't make me too happy. With a bit of Googling, I figured that people had solved this problem by a handy util call Hiren's BootCD, I threw in the CD and fixed the MBR (Master Boot Record), there we go!
So far in this attempt the hackintosh has not only been usable but reliable, Office 2004 and Adobe CS2 ran nicely and without much delay on Rosetta. I have got Core Image / Quartz Extreme acceleration from the first boot, I have got LAN and sound without installing another single "kext" (driver kernels). All applications coded with the Universal binary ran smoothly, I have been FTPing with Cyberduck, web-surfing on Camino browser for a week without a single kernel panic.
So what's new? You may ask. Well... ironically, the good news is, Windows is back! By means of Parallels desktop virtualization, I was able to run windows inside a virtual machine without cursor delays even on a crappy Celeron without hardware VT (Virtualization Technology) support.
I did some Geekbenching and the results were impressive, natively the Celeron 330J scored about the same as a single core iMac G5, and on Rosetta, this thing is faster than any late-spec PowerMac G4!
If any of you wanna build yourself one for fun, here are the specs I used:
Installation disc: JaS 10.4.6 DVD ISO w/ AMD/Intel SSE2/SSE3 patches
CPU: Intel Celeron D 330J @ 2.66GHz (LGA775 socket)
MB: AsRock 775Dual-915GL (Built-in GMA900 display, LAN and SATA)
RAM: 1GB DDR400 (Geil Value series 2 x 512MB)
HDD: Seagate 7200.7 IDE
ODD: Toshiba SD-R5002 (in fact, any IDE ODD drive will do)
KB/Mouse: Generic PS/2
Guess that's it for now, I'll post my update after my long-awaited G5 case-conversion.
