iPhone offline Google Map: A quick peek 五月 31. 2008

I am heading to Beijing next Monday, so I decided to make better use of my iPhone by loading offline maps into it. For those who are interested, this is how you do it on firmware 1.1.4 (I have no idea and wouldn't bother trying it on earlier versions).

What you need: iPhone, WiFi connection, SSH/SFTP connection and client (I use Fugu on OS X), the map data files

1. Connect to your WiFi network
2. Go to Installer, add source "http://www.in7ane.com/iphone.xml". From there you'd be able to install the iLM offline map switcher by Jason Lin
3. Download map files from the net, there are plenty of sources out there, for example this one: http://www.myiphones.com.cn/wjbd/20080416/5975.shtml [hint: for us Chinese do a good search on Baidu!]
4. Extract the maps and put them in folder /var/mobile/Media/Maps [hint: you may need to create your Maps folder] through SSH/SFTP
5. Launch iLM from springboard, pick your destination city [normally I choose the Action Link option] and there you go!

Who is bringing 3G iPhone to Hong Kong? Some wild prediction. 五月 31. 2008

It seems apparent that Apple is going to roll out a new 3G version of the iPhone pretty soon, MacRumor claimed today "the 3G-capable iPhone will reportedly support a protocol known as HSPA. AT&T just announced that they will be completing their HSPA deployment by June, in time for the rumored 3G iPhone launch.

Not long ago in Hong Kong, Ericsson announced that"Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has been selected by leading operator SmarTone-Vodafone in Hong Kong as the sole supplier for network enhancements... under the three-year agreement, Ericsson will be the sole supplier of a HSPA-enabled radio access network.."

Now who is bring iPhone to Hong Kong? Isn't that a safe bet? Don't quote me but let's wait and see.

It turns out I was wrong, 3 HK is the winner of the iPhone bid. But are they stupid or what? Don't they notice their customer base and iPhone's target crowd are big mismatches?

3 HK is probably going to lose big money in this game...
