Hackintosh 2011 Update

My Hackintosh rig has been running OS X Leopard for a couple of years, I did not take the time and the risk attempting to do a Snow Leopard install as I clearly know how much of a hassle it would have been.

I earned a week of extra days off recently, having the latest version of iATKOS L2 (Lion 10.7.2) release handy, I bit the bullet and wiped my boot partition to rebuild my rig from ground up. Although I knew it will not be easy, I wasn't really expecting that much amount of work to be honest. But as it turned out, the outcome was satisfactory, and I am now having the privilege to work on a modern Mac-clone that runs like a breeze.

Unlike Leopard, Lion is now running a 64 bit kernel, which rendered all my previous drivers outdated and non-working, among these it was the Realtek 8139 ethernet card and my ATI Radeon HD2400 Pro that were most vital, without a properly configured display and internet connection, everything else is crap. After several days of handwork and frustration, I solved these problems by buying new hardware, namely a HK$169 USB-to-Ethernet adapter that is based on the Axis AX88178, the same chipset Apple used in its USB-Ethernet dongle. 64-bit 10.7 driver can be found here: http://www.asix.com.tw/.

For display card, I was clearly out of luck so I didn't waste (too much) time digging into forums for solutions, I went ahead and bought the cheapest Nvidia GF100 Fermi-based display card available in the market, a Galaxy GT 520, for HK$385. The combined effort of installing Chimera 2.0 boot loader, Multibeast 4.2 for Lion (choosing the 64-bit Apple Boot Logo that fixes the need to input "npci=0x2000" argument each time I boot, and GF100 OpenCL enabler), GTX5xx Enabler from the download section of osx86.net, as well as the latest CUDA driver directly from Nvidia, have resulted in an OpenCL compatible hackintosh that allows me to run even Final Cut Pro X!

Nook 使用 Andriod 系統的其中一個優勢是內建 Unicode (UTF-8) 字型。雖然官方並未正式支持中文 epub 檔，但其實只需把下載回來的 epub 電子書稍為修改一下，便能夠讓系統顯示內建中文字型。方法有幾個，我在這裡分享一個最簡單的:

1. 每一個標準 epub 檔骨子裡其實都是把一堆 XML 壓在一起的一個 zip 檔，隨便用 unzip 軟體如 Mac OS 的 stuffit，或 Windows 的 Winzip、WinRAR 等打開中文 epub 檔，我們都會看到 META-INF 和 OPS 兩個資料夾。

2. 點擊進入 OPS 資料夾，你自會看到 css 和 images，再點擊進入 css 資料夾。

3. 這裡你會看到 main.css，可能也是資料夾內唯一的檔案。

4. 下載我早預備好的 main.css，把原來的換掉，重新 save as 一個 epub 檔。

5. 大功告成!

近日水果牌的「愛pad」全城熱賣，身邊的好友親朋幾乎人人手執一台，當我說暫時沒興趣加入他們的行列，旁人好像都覺得是件天大的稀奇事。其實我並非特別忍得，更非零舍節儉(你讀下去自會明白) ，只不過我覺得「愛pad」現行的 10 寸 form factor，以及它提供的的功能均配合不到小弟的生活習慣。有人說，書籍電子化是大勢所趨… 對，我也這樣認為，奈何用配備 10 寸彩色 LCD 顯示屏的「愛pad」來看書真的不知是鍛練眼力還是臂力，於是就有了下面的一段。

幾個星期前得到前上司的仗義相助從美國敗了一台 Barnes & Noble 出品的 Nook WiFi 回來，一向資訊飢渴的小弟如今可以從網上下載 PDF Magazine Scans 來啃了。呵呵，MIT Technology Review、 Wallpaper、數位時代、European Car 等香港買不到又或是貴得很的雜誌手到拿來，多好... 最好的是其售價僅為 US$149!

我找老友粉皮略略解釋了一次，然後到網上輯錄了 Soft Root 這台機器的教學，照著來做便把 Nook 破解了，並灌進了 NookLauncher、APDFviewer 等 Android 應用。這教學我轉成 PDF 檔，有興趣的可到這裡下載:

週末先跑到黃金先入手一片 8GB MicroSD 以供儲存雜誌、書籍之用，盛惠 HK$110 大洋。

用扁平的硬物從機器兩邊打開後蓋放入 MicroSD，我用是指甲鉗的後半部。

OS X Youtube 影片下載術

近日身邊好友紛紛轉用 Mac, 各人用機習慣可能迴異，但 Mac OS 在多媒體應用的優勢卻是不爭的事實。在此分享一個每個人都有機會用到的秘技 - Youtube 下載，無論你用來珍藏 MV、獨自在家唱悶 K 或是團契領詩，都應該會用得著這個便利功能。

1. 首先隨便找一個 Youtube 的連接以 Safari 開啟，比如說影音使團《如果還有明天》的連接就是 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW0OuHnRc88 。
2. 在你找來的 Youtube 連接後加上 &fmt=18 (這樣做的原因是要求 Youtube 播放該片段的最高質素，如片段有 1080p 高清選項，你下載回來的便是 1080p 高清視頻!), 沿用以上例子，高質素連接便成了 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW0OuHnRc88&fmt=18 。
3. 可以隨它開始播放...
4. 同時按下 Command-Option-A 啟動 Activity Monitor
5. 這時 Activity Monitor 視窗將會出現，向上/下檢視你將會看到一個 file size 很大且不斷增加 (通常是十多 MB 以上) 的一項，對著它 Option-Double Click，你會發覺 Safari 的 Download Manager 在下載一個叫 videoplayback.mp4 的檔案，這就是你要的影片。
6. 餘下來的就是打開 Download folder, 給 videoplayback.mp4 一個相應的新名字，然後移到你要保存的 folder 中，就是這麼簡單!

A few hours of forum-crawling got me the very first release of firmware version 1.4 for Panasonic Lumix G1, which permits the use of 3rd party batteries. I have installed it successfully on my parallel imported Japanese version and have been using 3rd party batteries since. I have uploaded it to a file-sharing site to save you people some time, please note that it has not been tested on the English version or any other, download and use at your own risk.

Got this Vario-Elmarit-R 28-90mm f/2.8-4.5 from my uncle, it was previously used on his now-sold R9, and was put aside because it suffered a stuck UV filter and broken focusing mechanism. This baby costs over HK$30K brand new, though I got it for free, I may have to pay a fortune to get it fixed. But once it is, I'd be able to use one of the most respected R-system zoom lens on my G1 via an adapter. No matter how much Leica charges for repair, it is going to make a trip to Solms, Germany for at least two months.

Sad news eh? Not really... I still get to play with his another Leica gem in the time-being, the Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5, taken off a Digilux 3.

Acer Aspire One netbook 安裝 retail 版 Snow Leopard 教學

土耳其核客 Turk team 推出的 iATKOS V7 是在 Acer Aspire One 上安裝 Mac OS 10.5 Leopard 的無敵利器，小弟也最少經手替 4 台 Aspire One 灌入過 iATKOS。等了近半年也未見 Turk team 釋出傳聞中名為 “iKaros” 的 Snow Leopard distro，我決定另覓良方把原裝 retail 版 Snow Leopard 裝到手上的 Aspire One 之中。

安裝過程非常簡單，所需配件如下:

- 1GB RAM 或以上的 Aspire One
- 外置 DVD-ROM
- 內置硬碟 (SSD 我沒試過)
- Aspire One 需預裝了Broadcom 4311 Wifi 模組
- 8GB 或以上 USB 手指
- FAT / Mac OS 格式的外置硬碟 (NTFS 的不行) ，或另一只 8GB 或以上 USB 手指
- Mac OS X 10.6 retail 版 Disc Image (DMG 檔)

1. 先以 iATKOS V7 光碟 boot 機，然後把 Leopard 安裝至 USB 手指，需時約半小時
2. 完成後把 DVD-ROM 拔掉重啟，並選擇以 USB 手指 boot 機
3. 進入 Leopard 後，插入載有 Mac OS X 10.6 retail 版 DMG 檔的外置硬碟或另一只 USB 手指，mount image
4. 到這裡下載一個 patched for MBR install 的 OSInstall.mpkg
在 Finder 中開啟 Go > Go to folder，鍵入 /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/，再按 return，換入剛下載的 OSInstall.mpkg
5. 然後再把之前一併下載的 OSInstall 換入 /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Frameworks/OSInstall.framework/Versions/A/
5. 點擊 OSInstall.mpkg 開始安裝 Snow Leopard 至 Aspire One 內置硬碟 (需要重新格式化為 MBR - 並分為 Mac OS Extended 及 FAT 兩個 partition)
6. 完成後別重啟電腦，先下載並安裝 netbook installer 至 Aspire One 內置硬碟
7. 重啟，然後下載並以 Kext helper 安裝 Voodoo HDA 來激活內置音效 (暫未支援 mic 輸入)
8. 也順道下載並安裝 AboutThisMac 來更正 Atom CPU 資訊，重啟
9. 開啟 Terminal 並輸入下列 Unix 指令以避免機身合上時進入 Sleep 狀態 (Aspire One 上跑 OS X 不支援休眠)

sudo -s
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/ClamshellDisplay.kext
touch /System/Library/Extensions

10. 以 Disk Utility Repair Permission 並再重啟
11. 大功告成! 由於是 retail install 並以 netbook installer patch 過，打開 Software update 便可輕鬆升級至 10.6.2

Photo stolen from a thread on dchome.net, my first time seeing this incredible Leica gem in action, and it's not on an M-body, but on a Panasonic Lumix GF1!

This lens sells for over HK$80K, the closest affordable alternative would be Cosina Voigtlander's Nokton 50mm f/1.1.

從家父手中接收了兩支 30 年沒動過的 M42 mount 手動鏡，其中 Pentax SMC 50mm f/1.4 是公認的好東西，另外那支 Vivitar 28mm f/2.5 相對就沒那麼吸引。早兩天隨手撿來拍了兩張黑白照，f/2.5 光圈雖然尷尬了點，但其散景也足夠突出主體讓本來平平無奇的廁紙和汽水樽看來感覺不錯，難怪那麼多 Leica 拍友到今天還是堅持拍黑白了。

物盡其用之 FON La Fonera (改裝 DD-WRT router 篇)

幾年前當一般 4 port router 還要幾百元一台的時候，小弟和當時幾位同事都買了只售 HK$119 的 FON La fonera 來給自己在公司設置 WiFi AP，主要用途是用來破解當時剛推出的 iPhone 2G。當時要在本港使用 iPhone，需要老遠從捷克訂購 TurboSIM，然後用 WiFi 經 SSH 傳輸一堆檔案讓 TurboSIM 扮成 AT&T 的 SIM card... 這種遠古破解方法我想現時先達那些「 iPhone達人」們有部份可能根本未聽說過! 當年還沒有 AppStore，WiFi AP 的主要用途是用來從 Installer 和後期的 Cydia 下載破解檔。自從 Geohotz 發現 firmware 漏洞之後，軟破解 iPhone 變得越來越容易，幾乎傻既都懂，小弟後來也轉職了一家架設了嚴密防火牆的新公司，La Fonera 變得無用武之地，但棄之又嫌可惜，便給我冷落在房間的一角了。

在這裡先要淺談一下 FON 的背景: FON 是一家公司，他們賣一個硬體的無線寬頻分享器，取名叫 La Fonera. 每個想要加入的人要先買一個他們出產的 router，在 FON 的社群裡註冊一個帳號，然後在家裡裝上 La Fonera，你便開始向 FON 社群分享了網絡連線。用戶在全世界有 FON Access Point 的地方都可以用自己的帳戶登入 FON 網絡免費上網，好一個網絡大同的概念! 為了確保所有買了La Fonera 的用戶都向其他人分享寬頻，這個當年賣 HK$119 的 AP 只支持 Ethernet to FON WiFi，不能當作普通 WiFi router 或 client 來用，SSID 不能修改，而其他功能也一併給遮蔽掉。

近期多次有需要在教會一樓用電腦，那裡差勁的 WiFi 接收讓我興起了要給它架設一個 repeater 的念頭，這時我想到塵堆中的FON La Fonera。說 La Fonera是一台封印了的 router 並不為過，其System-On-Chip Atheros AR2315 / AR5006 和 183 MHz 處理器的規格其實不賴，於是坊間便有玩家把 DD-WRT 韌體刷入 La Fonera，讓它解除封印變成一台真正的 router，可提供如 VPN、Bridging、Client mode、AP mode等多項進階功能。
